THE CHARLES H. BEST DIABETES CENTRE "BUILDING THE BEST" EXPANSION CAMPAIGN
The demand for The Best Centre's patient services has increased at an annual average rate of 14.5% over the last decade. The Best Centre has an active case load of about 1,800 people with a projection to grow to almost 3,400. The estimated future demand indicates a growth of 93% over the next 10 years. The prevalence of type 1 diabetes; 5000 per million; was applied to the Durham Region forecasted population of 894,575; this generates an estimate of 4473 Durham residents will have type 1 diabetes. The Best Centre's expansion will go a long way to meet the forecasted need and will act as a beacon of hope for those dealing with this incurable disease.
WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT TO EXPAND THE BEST CENTRE AND MEET THE GROWING NEED.
With the support of our generous donors, we have kick-started our fundraising campaign — but we can’t break ground without you. Together, we will build a state-of-the-art, multi-disciplinary health and wellness centre to better serve our growing population of children, adolescents and adults challenged every day by type 1 diabetes.
'Building the Best' is a fundraising campaign designed to ensure children, youth, adults and their families continue to have access to the best diabetes management care in Ontario, and arguably the country. Preliminary designs are completed with a vision to maintain a high level of individualized support. The goal is to expand the current footprint to provide adequate space, increasing access to expertise care. Due to patient population demands, the new expansion is necessary and long overdue.
YOUR SUPPORT WILL HELP US TO CONTINUE AND EXPAND ON THE WORK WE DO:
These unique services are not found elsewhere in the provincial healthcare system. They include:
24/7 on-call clinical educator service for newly diagnosed patients and those with emergent needs; often resulting in saving a trip to the emergency room.
Comprehensive school and outreach programs; including home visits and telehealth services.
Advanced knowledge translation and education for healthcare professionals.
Extensive patient training for insulin pump and continuous glucose monitoring.
Overall, the new expansion will allow qualified clinical teams to provide transformational care to – unfortunately, a growing type 1 diabetes population. Expanded and enriched space will allow for all those in need to have access to:
Intensive ambulatory care to any patient with a diagnosis of type 1, in order to enable rapid discharge from hospital and/or to avoid emergency room visits and read-missions;
Equitable expert education, care and support for all patients with type 1 diabetes
An expanding regional insulin pump program for children, youth and adults with type 1 diabetes – the only one of its kind in Canada;
Education and support for patients with continuous glucose monitoring devices which can greatly improve health outcomes and quality of life
A team of expert educators who are highly skilled to provide state of the art management
Our Founder, Marlene Grass, RN
“The past 30 years has seen significant changes in the evolution of our The Charles H. Best Diabetes Centre. Expanding our mandate of serving children and youth to include adults of all ages with type 1 was, and is, monumental, unique, innovative and much needed. The Best Centre has set a high standard of education and care delivery. We must continue to strive to exceed this standard of care and meet the ever increasing demand for our services. As we enter our 31st year and beyond, we need to expand our heritage home-like site in Whitby to be here in the future for those who need us. We will develop more specialized staff to advance our state-of- the- art program delivery; to follow our mission to keep our children, youth and adults healthy until a cure is found. We cannot sustain our program delivery model without your financial support"
For 30 years, The Charles H. Best Diabetes Centre continues to provide the best diabetes management care in the country – the new expansion under the Building the Best Campaign will ensure that those coping with type 1 diabetes continue to have the constant care they need and deserve.
